Discover Amara Indian Restaurant

If you’re wandering along 51-53 Northbourne Ave, Canberra ACT 2601, Australia, and craving rich spices, slow-cooked curries, and the kind of naan that arrives steaming and slightly charred at the edges, Amara Indian Restaurant is the place that immediately comes to mind. I’ve visited more than once, both for casual dinners and a larger birthday gathering, and each experience has felt consistent, welcoming, and deeply satisfying.

The first thing that stands out is the aroma. Before you even glance at the menu, you’re met with the scent of roasted cumin, cardamom, and smoky tandoor heat. Indian cuisine is known for its layered spice profiles, and according to research highlighted by Harvard Health, spices like turmeric and ginger are associated with anti-inflammatory properties and digestive benefits. You can taste that freshness here. The kitchen clearly understands balance-nothing feels overly heavy or artificially spiced.

On my most recent visit, I ordered the butter chicken alongside garlic naan and a side of saffron rice. The sauce was velvety, slightly sweet, and carried just enough heat to keep things interesting. A friend chose the lamb rogan josh, slow-cooked until tender. The texture told me it had been simmered properly, allowing the spices to penetrate deeply rather than sitting on the surface. That kind of patience in preparation doesn’t happen by accident; it’s a process rooted in traditional North Indian cooking methods where meat is marinated and cooked gradually to preserve moisture and flavor.

The menu covers a wide range of regional favorites-think biryani, vindaloo, tikka masala, vegetarian korma, and freshly baked naan straight from the tandoor oven. For vegetarians and vegans, the selection feels thoughtful rather than an afterthought. Lentil-based dals, chickpea curries, and paneer dishes offer protein-rich alternatives. The World Health Organization often emphasizes the benefits of plant-based meals for heart health, and dishes like chana masala here are both hearty and nourishing without sacrificing taste.

What I personally appreciate is how the staff walk you through the spice levels. Indian food can intimidate some diners, but here they explain the difference between mild, medium, and hot in practical terms. They’ll even adjust the heat if you ask. During a group dinner, one guest preferred something very mild, and the kitchen happily accommodated without compromising the dish’s integrity. That flexibility speaks volumes about their service culture.

The dining room itself feels relaxed yet polished. It works equally well for a quick weekday dinner or a longer weekend meal with friends. During peak hours, especially on Friday evenings, it’s smart to book ahead. Reviews from Canberra locals consistently mention the attentive service and generous portions, and from my experience, those comments ring true. Plates arrive hot, and there’s a steady rhythm between courses without feeling rushed.

Another highlight is the tandoori selection. The chicken tikka I tried last winter had that unmistakable smoky flavor from the clay oven. Cooking in a tandoor requires extremely high heat, often exceeding 400°C, which seals in juices quickly. It’s a technique that dates back centuries in the Indian subcontinent, and when done properly, it produces a slightly crisp exterior with tender meat inside. That authenticity adds to the overall credibility of the kitchen.

Pricing is reasonable considering portion sizes and location along Northbourne Avenue. Whether you’re dining in, ordering takeaway, or arranging catering for a small function, the quality remains steady. I’ve even recommended it to colleagues visiting Canberra for conferences, and the feedback afterward was consistently positive.

Of course, no restaurant is perfect every single night. On one busy evening, there was a short wait before our mains arrived. However, the staff communicated clearly and offered updates, which built trust rather than frustration. Transparency like that matters.

From the diverse menu to the reliable service and well-executed classics, this Indian restaurant delivers on flavor, authenticity, and comfort. It’s the kind of spot where you return not just for the curries, but for the entire experience-the warm hospitality, the scent of toasted spices, and the satisfying feeling of a meal prepared with genuine care.

  • I can’t recommend this place highly enough. We came in quite late last night when the restaurant was already busy and close to closing, but the staff were so welcoming and accommodating. They never made us feel rushed and we were able to enjoy our meal at our own pace. The food was absolutely incredible and easily one of the best Indian restaurants in Canberra. I’ve been to most in the area and this is the only one that’s truly matched the flavours and authenticity of my recent trip to India. Every dish was rich, fragrant and cooked to perfection. The photos are from my last visit for the lunchtime banquet and from last night when we had beef vindaloo, mini keema dosa, a large masala dosa, chicken momo, paneer kalimirch, garlic naan, rice and a mango margarita. The momos, naan, curry and rice aren’t visible in the pictures but they were just as amazing as everything else. They’ve been here for almost a year now with their first anniversary coming up on August 22 and they have never disappointed. The staff are warm and friendly, the atmosphere is inviting and every visit has been a consistently great experience. I’ll definitely keep coming back. A real gem in Canberra.

  • We visited Amara Restaurant in Canberra with our friends during a very busy time of the year, close to closing time. Despite this, the staff kindly arranged a table for us, and we ended up being the last guests in the restaurant. We truly appreciated their warm hospitality and excellent service. The food was great, and everything about the experience was wonderful. Thank you to the team at Amara for such a memorable dining experience. I would highly recommend Amara Restaurant.

  • 1 x Butter Chicken 1 x Garlic and Cheese Naan 1 x Pappadum Butter Chicken was just perfect. Sauce was not too sweet, but nice and smooth and spiced properly. While the flavour of the sauce wasn't in the chicken, the chicken itself was cooked perfectly and didn't distract at all. Strong recommend. Naan was nothing to write home about and again, didn't distract from the outstanding sauce. Good size and a good butter chicken to mouth delivery system. Strong Recommend. Pappadums were an unexpected outstanding entree. Came with a refreshing mint dip that went perfectly with them and cleansed the pallet before the main. We had some left over after the main and it tasted different afterward so I am glad this came before the main. Strong Recommend. Overall, Strong Recommend.

  • The food was excellent. We had the lamb korma and butter chicken. The meat was tender and the curry very flavourful. The garlic naan was crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. The onion bhaji was crispy but not too oily. The rice was also good and a very large serving—we got two serves for two people but would have been fine with one serve. The service was also excellent. There is table service and the servers checked up on us to make sure we were happy. I booked ahead requesting a wheelchair accessible table and they sat us at the table closest to the door with plenty of space and a chair already removed—excellent. They took our leftovers and packed them nicely then returned them in a paper bag. I ended up forgetting my handbag and the staff were quick to call me so I could come back and collect it. The meal was pricey but worth it. We had lots of leftovers which were enough for another meal altogether.

  • Came here on the recommendation of a friend, I was delighted. The garlic naan was light and fluffy, crisp on the outside but soft and doughy on the inside with the perfect level of seasoning. The main meals were tender and flavoursome. The bite of fresh herbs like ginger in the chicken tikka made the meals very enjoyable. The service was warm and polite and the atmosphere calm and welcoming.

  • We stumbled into this restaurant thinking we were at a different one. I’m so glad we stayed. The young man who recommended dishes was very attentive and wanted to make sure we enjoyed the dosa, which none of us had before. I also tried a mango lassi for the first time. Wow! And the butter chicken was some of the best I had ever had!

  • Truly one of the best Indian meals I've ever had, and I've eaten a LOT. The Butter Chicken was a particular hit - best ever IMO, and it's a high bar. The Lamb Rogan Josh had a good kick while not being overpowering with heat, and the Seekh Kebab (lamb sausage) had a sensational flavour balance - heat, savoury, seasoning and a little bit of sweet. The Dosa was also really excellent - nicely balanced and tasty with a great pancake. The staff are great and the setting is very pleasant. Overall it's just very high quality modern Indian. I'll be going back here again even though I'm not a local - the kind of place you'd go out of your way to have dinner.

  • Amara Indian Restaurant in Canberra absolutely impressed me! Their Bangalore dosa is outstanding — crisp on the outside, soft inside, and full of authentic flavour. The accompaniments make it even better: the coconut chutney, potato curry, sambar, and the fragrant spice powder all come together beautifully. The palak pakora is just as memorable — light, crunchy, and perfectly seasoned without feeling oily. Their momos and prawn starter are also fantastic, packed with flavour and cooked perfectly. The staff were incredibly nice and helpful, which made the whole experience even more enjoyable. You can really feel the warmth and care in both the food and the service. If you’re craving truly delicious South Indian food in Canberra, Amara is a must-visit!
